About

I’m Matt, a product designer in East Grand Rapids, Michigan.

For about fifteen years I’ve designed products where two sides need different things: restaurants and their guests at Olo and Tock, beverage distributors and the bars that buy from them at Provi, stylists and their clients at Trunk Club. At Blueprint it’s therapists and the people they care for.

I started out as a designer who also wrote the code, and I still do. Most weeks I’m as likely to be in a pull request as in Figma. The part I like best is the middle of a problem: working out what we should build and why, then helping get it built.

I trust evidence over taste when I can get it, including about my own tools and process. If I’m not sure something works, I’d rather test it than argue about it, and I’m happy to be proven wrong.

When I’m not working, I’m outside as much as I can be, sailing and training for endurance races, and the rest of the time I’m waiting on things to ferment: beer, sourdough, the occasional batch of wine.
